BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Colorado State men’s golf team closed out its season Saturday, finishing in a tie for 9th at the NCAA regional tournament at the Club at Olde Stone.
The Rams finished shy of the fifth-place finish needed to advance to the NCAA championships, but Head Coach Jamie Bermel is pleased with his team’s late-season push to earn a regional berth for the sixth straight season and the 12th time in the last 13 years.
"Any time you make regionals it's a good year,” said Bermel. “We started out strong this week and just couldn't hang in there. I'm disappointed but not discouraged."
Freshman Cameron Harrell, senior Zahkai Brown, and sophomore Parker Edens each recorded top-20 individual finishes for the Rams. Harrell paced CSU, shooting a three-round score of 217 (+1) to close the tournament alone in 13th place. He fired a 1-over 73 on Saturday.
Brown also shot a 73 during the final round and finished two over for the tournament in a tie for 14th. Edens tied for 19th, shooting two over par on Saturday to card a three-round score of 220 (+4).
Junior Kirby Pettitt rounded out the scoring the Rams on Day 3, tallying a 79 and finishing with a three-day total of 238. Pettitt tied for 69th, five strokes behind senior Mike Wuertz who closed the tourney tied for 57th.
"We didn't get off to a very good start today,” added Bermel. “We turned OK, but we just made too many bogies. When you get five or six off the cut line you start forcing things.”
Chattanooga, Texas A&M, UCLA, Virginia Tech and Memphis finished 1-5, respectively to advance to the NCAA championships.
