AUSTIN, Texas – Colorado State sophomore Jake Staiano wrapped up three days of postseason competition with a tie for 38th at the 2017 NCAA Men’s Golf Austin Regional, May 15-17. The three-day, 54-hole event, hosted by the University of Texas, is being played at UT Golf Club (Par 71 / 7,355 yards) in Austin, Texas.
Staiano started his final 18 on No. 10 and couldn’t find the rhythm, making four bogeys to just one birdie in the first nine holes. The sophomore was even par on his second nine of the day that included two birdies and two bogeys to finish the day at 3-over 74 and post a 54-hole score of 8-over 221 in the 75-player field.
“Jake hit the ball very well this week,” head coach Christian Newton said. “He struggled to adjust to the greens. He kept his composure all week, and I’m proud of his effort. This caps off a tremendous season for him, and I look forward to even more growth.”
Iowa State’s Nick Voke took home medalist honors after a stellar 10-under 61 in the final round to finish at 14-under 199, five shots ahead of 36-hole leader Doug Ghim of Texas. No. 3 Oklahoma State rallied in the final round to take team honors at the regional, finishing at 13-under 839, two shots ahead of host No. 16 Texas. No. 50 Iowa State, No. 22 Ole Miss and No. 26 Arizona State also advanced to the NCAA Championship. Nationally ranked No. 4 according to Golfstat, Will Zalatoris of Wake Forest qualified as an individual for the NCAA Championship out of the region after tying for fifth at 3-under 210.
The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each of the six regional sites are advancing to the finals. Team and individual medalist titles will be decided May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois. Northern Illinois University is the host institution for the 2017 championships.
