TUCSON, Ariz.- Colorado State men's golf remains in the middle of the pack after Day 2 of the Mountain West Conference championship at Catalina Course Friday. Ryan Peterson is 2 strokes back from the top spot.

Peterson carded a 1-under-par 70 in the second round combining for a 137 (-5) with one round left Saturday.  He is in fourth place chasing three golfers all tied in first. Johan Carlsson of San Diego State, Derek Earnest of UNLV and Gabe Maier of Wyoming are all tied at 135 (-7).

Peterson is in good position to move up the leaderboard Saturday. Head Coach Jamie Bermel was pleased with his effort Friday.

"Ryan played real well again but got nothing out of his round," said Bermel. "Hopefully tomorrow he can get some putts to fall."

Mike Sorensen is up from 34th Thursday to a tied spot of 25th Friday. An even-par 71 in Round 2 put Sorenson at 146 (+4). Zahkai Brown and Kory Harrell are both tied in 28th place with a 147 (+5). Brown shot an even-par 71 in Round 2 and Harrell carded a 75 (+4).

Kirby Pettitt struggled Friday. He combined for six bogeys in the round to finish with a 77 (+6). Pettitt is tied in 35th with a 149 (+7).

CSU is in fifth place and combined for 287 (+3) in Round 2. Overall, the team is at 286-287--573 (+5)

The Rams struggle to get a sufficient fourth score. Bermel and his team need better scores to move up Saturday.

"We need five guys playing well," said Bermel. "The first two days we have counted a 75 for our fourth score and it kills our team score. We are hitting the ball well enough now and just need some putts to fall."

San Diego State leads the nine Mountain West teams with a 287-281--559 (-9). UNLV is in close second with a 287-273--560 (-8).

Colorado State tees off at 8 a.m. MT Saturday. Live scoring is available at www.themwc.com.
