EL MACERO, Calif. – The Colorado State men’s golf team matched it’s opening round of 297 (+9) during Saturday’s second round of play, holding steady in a tie for fifth place at the El Macero Classic heading into Sunday’s third, and final, round at El Macero Country Club.
"We were in position to shoot a solid round through about 15 holes, but we did not finish the last holes well,” said head coach Christian Newton. “This group has got to learn to sprint to the finish line. A few messy bogeys per player can really add up and ruin a round. If someone can step up and shoot a low number tomorrow we will come away with a nice result."
Two Rams, senior Parker Edens and freshman Jimmy Makloski, enter the final round of action tied for 13th place in the 69-player field, pacing the Colorado State squad with identical two-round score of 147 (+3).
Makloski, a native of Pueblo, Colo., birdied each of the first two holes of the day, helping him shave a stroke off his opening round of 2-over 74. He carded a 73 (+1) on Saturday to jump seven spots up the individual leaderboard from a tie for 20th.
“I started off really well and hit it pretty good all day,” said Makloski after Saturday’s round. “I just made a few dumb mistakes and missed a few short putts. I feel like I was close to having a really nice round today.”
Edens, who hails from Greeley, Colo., also moved up the individual leaderboard on Saturday. Despite dropping one stroke from his opening round of 73 (+1), with a 2-over 74 in Round 2, he ascended from a tie for 14th into position along with Makloski at 13th.
Sophomore Dominic Kieffer overcame a slow start, carding five birdies to counter a pair of early double bogeys on the front nine, and two other bogeys on the back nine. He finished with a 1-over 73 on Saturday, moving from 33rd into a tie for 21st with a two-round score of 149 (+5), one stroke outside of the top 20.
Junior Cameron Harrell rounded out the scoring for the Rams on Day 2. The Colorado Springs, Colo., native opened with a 4-over 76 on Friday, and carded a 5-over 77 on Saturday to sit in a tie for 42nd with a two-round total of 153 (+9).
Alec Bone, from true freshman from Phoenix, Ariz., sits one stroke ahead of Harrell through 36 holes in a tie for 34th. Bone, who carded a 2-over 74 during Friday’s first round, opened 1-under on the front nine Saturday before shooting +7 on the back nine to finish Round 2 with a 6-over 78.
Co-host UC Davis sits atop the team leaderboard with a two-round score of 563 (-14), followed by CSU Fullerton (880) in second place. Sacramento State (583) is third, followed by Grand Canyon (584) in fourth, and CSU and Cal Poly in a tie for fifth. CSU Fullerton’s Mark Anguiano continues to pace the field through 36 holes after shooting a 7-under 137, one stroke ahead of UC Davis’ Luke Vivolo.
The final round of the El Macero Classic begins Sunday morning. Tee times are slated to begin at 8 a.m. MT/7 a.m. PT. Live scoring is available at www.GolfStatResults.com.
