EL MACERO, Calif. – The Colorado State men’s golf team opened play at the El Macero Classic on Friday. Three Rams posted top-20 scores through 18 holes, led by senior Parker Edens, and CSU sits in a tie for 5th in the 12-team field heading into Saturday’s second round of the 54-hole tournament at El Macero Country Club.
"No one played their best today but we managed to post a few good rounds,” said head coach Christian Newton. “We will need to shoot some under-par rounds the next few days to have a good finish."
Edens, a native of Greeley, Colo., paced the Rams in the opening round of action, carding a 1-over 73 to sit in a tie for 14th place, just one stroke outside of the top 10 and two swings away from the top-5 finishers with 36 holes left to play this weekend.
“Today was a pretty strange day,” said Edens after completing Round 1. “I didn't do anything really great or really bad. Everything was just a little off but I found a way to get the job done. I'm taking a new approach this week and not looking at scores or anything this week. Going to play hard and see where we end up at the end of the week.”
Edens’ new approach helped the senior offset three bogeys with a pair of birdies on Friday’s round, to finish one stroke ahead of freshmen teammates Alec Bone and Jimmy Makloski who also posted top-20 scores over their first outing of the event.
Makloski, who hails from Pueblo, Colo., overcame a slow start, which included three consecutive bogeys on Holes 3, 4 and 5, to save a stroke and finish his round with a 2-over 74, knotted with classmate Alec Bone. Bone, a native of Phoenix, Ariz., birdied No. 1 and No. 18, and added two more birdies on No. 13 and 15, but a triple-bogey on 17, coupled with three other bogeys on the back nine pushed his score to 2-over.
Co-host UC Davis sits atop the team leaderboard with a Round 1 score of 283 (-5), followed by CSU Fullerton (285) in second place and co-host Nevada (+5) and Sacramento State (+5) tied for third, four strokes ahead of the Rams and Grand Canyon to round out the top 5 at 297 (+9). CSU Fullerton’s Mark Anguiano paces the field through 18 holes after shooting a 7-under 65.
Round 2 of the El Macero Classic begins Saturday morning. Tee times are slated to begin at 11:30 a.m. MT/10:30 a.m. PT. The Rams, paired with golfers from Sacramento State and Grand Canyon, will be among the second sets of teeing off on Hole 1. Live scoring is available at www.GolfStatResults.com.
