TEMPE, Ariz.- Colorado State fell five spots Sunday in the final round of the Thunderbird Invitational at Karsten Golf Course. Zahkai Brown shot 5-over-par in his third round.
Going into the final round Brown was in third place but a 5-over 76 dropped him to a tie for 16th place in the 75-man field. He finished at 215 (+2). Ryan Peterson followed. Peterson shot 2-over-par in the third round and finished at 4-over-par 217. He tied for 27th place.
Kory Harrell finished 8-over-par 221 and tied for 45th place. Mike Sorenson carded a 4-over-par 75 in his final round and finished at 222 (+9). He tied for 49th place. Kirby Pettitt rounded out the Rams’ lineup. Pettitt combined for a 224 (+11) and tied in 57th place.
Colorado State was 6-over-par and in fifth place going into final round but a 297 (+13) dropped them into a tie for 10th place in the 13-team field. The team combined for a 285-289-297--871.
CSU didn’t finish this tournament like Head Coach Jamie Bermel would have liked.
“We just couldn’t finish the round today,” said Bermel. “We played the last three holes 9-over-par and moved to 10th place. Those three holes are tough holes but we made them much tougher.”
USC won the tournament with a 15-under-par 837. San Diego State finished second with an 851 (-1) and UNLV was third with an 857 (+5). San Diego State’s J.J. Spaun won the Thunderbird with a 206 (-7).
The Rams have four days to prepare for the Cougar Classic in Provo, Utah on Friday. CSU won the tournament last year and Coach Bermel looks to do it again.
“We need to get rested up and get ready to defend our title at BYU,” said Bermel.
