Day 1 results

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.- The Colorado State men’s golf team finished Day 1 of the 10th annual Wyoming Cowboy Classic played on the North Course of Talking Stick Golf Club in third place Monday. Senior Michael Wuertz leads the field by 3-strokes heading into the final round.
Wuertz carded season-best scores of 6-under 64 in Rounds 1 and 2 to finish the day at 128 (-12). Ben Juffer of Kansas State and Beau Schoolcraft of CU are tied in second place at 9-under 131.
Head Coach Jamie Bermel hopes Wuertz can take momentum in the final ound.
“Mike Wuertz played like a senior today,” Said Bermel. “I couldn’t be more proud of him. It was a great effort. If he continues that on Tuesday, we will have a real shot at winning the team title as well. We need all five guys playing well. It should be a lot of fun Tuesday!”
Junior Mike Sorenson posted a season-best score of 5-under 65 in Round 1 followed by a 1-over 71 in Round 2 to finish tied in eighth place with a 136 (-4). Senior Zahkai Brown is tied in 44th place with a 71-70--141 (+1).
Freshman Cameron Harrell finished Day 1 tied in 77th place with a 78-67--145 (+5). Junior Kirby Pettitt rounded out the Rams lineup with a 77-69--146 (+6) and is currently tied in 87th place.
In the 23-team field, CSU is 2 strokes out of the lead in third place with a 277-270--547 (-13). San Diego and Kansas State are tied for the lead with a 545 (-15).
Wuertz and the Rams will go after the title in Scottsdale Tuesday in the final round beginning at 8:30 a.m. MT.
