SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.- The Rams battled treacherous conditions in their first round at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, where Colorado State recorded a 316 (+36). CSU sits in 21st place out of the 24 teams.
The wind was such a hazard that today’s second round was cancelled. The event will now consist of 36 holes, with the final 18 holes being played tomorrow.
Head Coach Christian Newton believes his team was on the cusp of figuring out the conditions, just as the second round was cancelled.
“We did a great job of staying focused in the tough conditions,” said Coach Newton. “It’s very unfortunate the committee decided to cancel the second round because I feel we were starting to get comfortable.”
As for tomorrow’s final round, Coach Newton wants to see his team make some noise.
“It’s time to find out what we are made of and how bad this group really wants it,” said Coach Newton.
Senior Kirby Pettitt recorded a 76 (+6) in his first round, two strokes below the field average of 78.64. Pettitt is currently in a share of 27th place. Freshman Dominic Kieffer carded a 78 (+8) on the day, and is now in a share of 54th.
Junior Parker Edens, in his first action since being named MWC Player of the Week, could not keep his hot-streak going, as his 80 (+10) in the first round has him in a share of 79th. The Harrell brothers Kory and Cameron each fired 82’s (+12), and they both are tied for 94th place. Freshman Brett Wilson, who is competing as an individual, fired an 80 (+10) in his round, as he is now in a share of 79th.
