TEMPE, Ariz.- The Colorado State men's golf team finished Day 1 of the Thunderbird Invitational tied in 15th place Friday. Junior Mike Sorenson leads the team tied in 48th.
Head Coach Jamie Bermel hoped for better from his team on Day 1.
"We played an average Round 1 and just awful in Round 2," said Bermel. "We just kept hitting balls into the water and making bad mental mistakes."
Sorenson finished Day 1 7-over par 73-76--149. Senior Zahkai Brown combined for a 77-73--150 (+8) and is currently tied in 55th place.
Junior Kirby Pettit carded a 74-70--153 (+11) and is tied in 69th place. Senior Michael Wuertz is tied in 73rd place with a 71-83--154 (+12). Freshman Cameron Harrell rounded out the Rams lineup tied in 86th place with a 76-81--157 (+15).
San Diego State leads the 18-team field with a 282-275--557 (-11). CSU combined for a 294-309--603 (+35) and is tied in 15th place. San Diego State's Alex Kang is tied with Arizona State's Austin Quick in first place at 133 (-9).
Bermel expects better play in the final round.
"We need to execute much better," said Bermel. "Everyone needs to get more focused."
The Rams will tee-off at 8 a.m. Saturday for the final round. Live scoring will be available on Golf Stat.com.
