STANFORD, Calif. – The Colorado State men’s golf team held strong on Day 2 of The Goodwin Saturday, as sophomore Dominic Kieffer and the Rams battled both the weather, and the talented field at Stanford Golf Course.

“It rained off and all day, and we had the hardest draw of tee times by far,” said Rams’ head coach Christian Newton. “Considering we were 6-over after one hole I am pleased overall with today's outcome. Dom's round was just awesome especially in these conditions. We have a chance to beat some really good teams tomorrow if we have 5 guys playing smart golf.”

The Rams were paced by sophomore Dominic Kieffer who carded his third sub-70 round of the season, a 2-under 68, to jump from a tie for 58th to sit one stroke outside of the top 20 in a tie for 23rd with a two-round score of 141 (+1). Kieffer, a native of Byron, Minn., opened Round 2 in impressive fashion, carding five birdies over his first 10 holes.

“Today was a grind for sure,” said Kieffer. “The rain made it hard to get in any sort of rhythm. My score was a testament to just playing to the center of every green and staying patient.  Tomorrow we plan to take advantage of the good weather and make a run up the leaderboard.”

Junior Patrick Winther is just one stroke off Kieffer’s pace, sitting in a tie for 26th with a two-round score of 142 (+2). He opened the tournament Friday with a one-under 69, and enters Sunday’s final round coming off of a 3-over 73 on Saturday.

Senior Parker Edens dropped from a tie for 17th into a tie for 49th on the second day of action. His Round 2 score of 7-over 77 did not figure into the scoring for the Rams, but he opened with a round of 1-under 69 to sit at 6-over par through 36 holes.

Junior Cameron Harrell and true freshman Alec Bone rounded out the scoring for the Rams after Saturday’s round.  Harrell matched his opening round of 75, and is tied for 74th in the 92-player field with a two-round score of 150 (+10). Bone is one stroke behind Harrell, in a tie for 78th. He shaved one stroke off of his Round 1 score to fire a 75 in Round 2.

As a team, Colorado State moved from a three-way tie for ninth to sit alone in 10th place in the 18-team field. The Rams are 17-over (577) through 36 holes, 14 strokes outside of the top five, and 28 strokes off the pace set by host Stanford (549). The Cardinal are six strokes in front of second-place UCLA (-5) and nine strokes ahead of No. 3 Oregon (558). Washington (559) and USC (563) round out the top five, followed by St. Mary’s and UAB in a tie for fifth (567), and Northwestern and Fresno State (575) in a tie for eighth. Stanford’s Patrick Rodgers continues to pace the field with a two-round score of 132 (-8).

Play resumes Sunday for Round 3 of the 54-hole tournament. The Rams will be in the first groups teeing off on Hole No. 10, paired with Mountain West foes UNLV and San Diego State starting at 9 a.m. MT/8 a.m. PT.
