Junior Patrick Winther

STANFORD, Calif. – The Colorado State men’s golf team opened play at The Goodwin Friday at Stanford Golf Course, finishing the first round of competition in a four-way tie for ninth place behind a pair of top-20, Day 1 performances from senior Parker Edens and junior Patrick Winther.
“The guys played very steady today,” said Rams’ head coach Christian Newton. “We counted no double bogeys. I'm very happy with Parker and Patrick's performances. This is the strongest field we will see all year so we have to keep playing well to keep pace.”
Edens and Winther each carded rounds of 1-under 69 on Friday. It marked a season-low for Winther, in his first year at CSU after transferring from Oklahoma State. Edens’ round ties his season-best performance set in mid-October at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational.
Winther, a native of Copenhagen, Denmark, opened his round with bogeys on two of his first three holes of the day, but bounced back by closing with four birdies and one bogey over his final 14 holes to move into a tie with Edens, two strokes outside of the top-10 and six strokes off the pace set by tournament leader Patrick Rodgers of Stanford (63).
“I've been having problems with staying in the present and today was all about that,” said Winther following his best round in the green and gold. “I only focused on one shot at a time even though I caught myself thinking about upcoming holes. I really just tried forcing myself to focus on one shot at a time.”
Edens, a senior from Greeley, Colo., who also transferred to CSU after his freshman campaign at South Dakota State, was steady throughout Friday’s opening round, but used an eagle on the par-5 16th and a birdie on the par-3 17th holes to offset a pair of bogeys and finish at 1-under.
Sophomore Dominic Kieffer and junior Cameron Harrell also figured into the scoring for the Rams in Round 1. Kieffer closed his round at 3-over (73) to sit in a tie for 58th, two strokes ahead of Harrell who ranks as CSU’s season leader in stroke average. Harrell carded two birdies and seven bogeys on the day.
True freshman Alec Bone also competed for the Rams. A product of Phoenix, Ariz., Bone is making his debut in the Rams’ lineup after playing in three tournaments as an individual competitor earlier this season. He enters Saturday’s second round tied for 82nd in the 92-player field with a 6-over 76.
As a team, the Rams carded a Round 1 score of 286 (+6) and are knotted with Northwestern, Washington and Loyola Marymount to round out the top-10 team standings. Host Stanford paces the field with a 12-under 268 on Day 1. St. Mary’s (271), Oregon, (273), UCLA (277) and USC (278) are second through fifth, respectively, heading into Saturday’s final round. UAB (279) is sixth, followed by San Diego State (281) and TCU (282) in seventh and eighth, respectively.
Play resumes Saturday for Round 2 of the 54-hole tournament. The Rams will be in the first groups teeing off on Hole No. 10, paired with competitors from Washington and Loyola Marymount starting at 9 a.m. MT/8 a.m. PT.
