TEMPE, Ariz. – The Colorado State men’s golf team combined to shoot an 8–over 292 on Saturday at Arizona State’s Karsten Golf Course, sliding from a tie for eighth to sit alone in 10th heading into Sunday’s final round of action at the 2014 Thunderbird Invitational.

“We got off to a nice start today but made too many doubles later in the round to post a good score,” said Rams head coach Christian Newton. “The effort level and desire to play well certainly isn't the problem with these guys.”

Senior Parker Edens started his second round in a particularly impressive fashion, carding birdies on each of the first three holes and adding a fourth birdie on the par-5 14th. Edens jumped nine spots on the individual leader board, from a tie for 44th into a tie for 35th, finishing the second round at even-par to sit at 2-over with 18 holes to play.

“I got off to a very fast start and then didn't take advantage of some easier holes after some fantastic tee shots,” said Edens. “I'll definitely have to take advantage of my opportunities better tomorrow. This group is due for a great round and I see that happening tomorrow.”

Edens is tied with junior Cameron Harrell, who shot a 2-over 73 on Saturday.  Harrell also fell victim to a late mishap, tallying a double bogey on the final hole of the round after shooting even-par through 17 holes.

Freshman Jimmy Makloski matched Harrell’s 73 on Saturday, shaving seven strokes off of his opening-round score of 80 on Friday. Makloski sat at 3-over after the front nine, but birdied Nos. 10 and 14, and carded a bogey on 16, to finish 1-over on the day and move from 79th into a tie for 72nd in the 81-player field.

Junior Patrick Winther and sophomore Dominic Kieffer each fell off their pace from the opening round, carding 4-over 75 on Saturday. Winther, who opened with an even-par 71 on Friday, slid from 22nd into a tie for 50th. Kieffer shot a 72 in Round 1 and slid into a tie for 55th through 36 holes.

Host Arizona State sits atop the team standings, behind the play of Jon Rahm has shot a 16-under 126 to pace the field through 36 holes. The Sun Devils are 25-under as a team, 10 strokes ahead of second-place Iowa State and 12 strokes in front of No. 3 Iowa. Arizona is fourth at 10-under par, while Pepperdine and Wichita State are tied for fifth at -2.

Colorado State returns to the course for the final round of action tomorrow morning. The Rams, paired with Denver and Tulsa, will be in the second set of teams teeing off on No. 10, beginning at 9:20 a.m. MT/8:20 a.m. PT

“Tomorrow is another opportunity to compete and get better,” added Newton. “We will embrace that.”
