GOODYEAR, Ariz.- Colorado State began its first day at the 2013 Desert Shootout by making a statement with a first round score of 280 (-4). The Rams are currently in a share of third place with Denver and Southern Utah.
Head Coach Christian Newton was pleased with his team’s effort, as he saw his golfers become very consistent throughout the day.
“We had all five guys in the round today,” said Coach Newton. “It’s great to see our guys play the type of golf they are capable of.”
Junior Parker Edens led the Rams with a 67 (-4) in his first round of play. Edens was extremely efficient, as he recorded a 32 (-4) on the front nine and a 35 (E) on the back nine. Edens is currently among the top of the leader board as he shares fourth place.
Senior Kory Harrell was consistent as well, as his 35’s on the front and back nine have him sitting in a share of 20th after his first round 70 (-1). Fellow senior Kirby Pettitt carded a 71 (E) in his first 18 holes, as he now shares 31st place.
Sophomore Cameron Harrell was three-over par after his first nine holes, but recovered to shoot a 35 (E) on the back nine, as he finished with a first round total of 72 (+1). Freshman Dominic Kieffer recovered after a shaky front nine as well, as his 34 (-1) on the final nine holes gave him a total of 73 (+2). Harrell is currently in a tie in 44th and Kieffer is in a share of 57th. Freshman Brett Wilson, who is competing as an individual, recorded an 84 (+13) and now sits in 96th.
39 Tulsa (274) is atop the standings after the first round at the Palm Valley Golf Course, as they are followed by 42 BYU (275), 105 Denver (280), 70 Colorado State (280), 154 Southern Utah (280), 19 Illinois (282), 108 Idaho (282), 37 Baylor (283), 84 Wichita State (283), 135 Nebraska (285), 116 Air Force (286), 144 New Mexico State (286), 178 Boise State (286), 106 Kansas State (288), 103 Kansas (291) and 161 Wyoming (293).
