TEMPE, Ariz. – Colorado State put together two of its best team rounds of the season and is current second after 36 holes of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational, March 18. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by Arizona State University, is being played at ASU’s Karsten Golf Course (Par 71 – 7,033 yards) in Tempe, Ariz.
The No. 66 Rams shot an 8-under 276 in the morning and then improved by two shots in the afternoon with a 10-under 274 to post an 18-under 550. The two single-round totals are the lowest this year for the Rams. Host No. 26 Arizona State is the 36-hole leader at 37-under 531, followed by CSU, No. 16 UNLV in third at 16-under 552 and No. 73 California in fourth at 14-under 554. Arizona State’s “B” team is in fifth at 12-under 556, though the squad will not count in the final standings.
Sophomore Jake Staiano continues his solid performance this year, as he is currently fourth at 10-under par 132. Staiano shot a 4-under 67 in the morning and then a 6-under 65 in the afternoon, combining for 12 birdies and just two bogeys in his 36 holes of play. The 65 ties the second-lowest score this season for a CSU player and is tied for the lowest under-par round of the season. Junior Colton Yates matched Staiano in the second round with a 6-under 65, moving up 42 spots from his opening round 3-over 74 to a tie for 18th at 3-under 139 with teammate senior Blake Cannon. Cannon posted rounds of 3-under 68 and even-par 71 on the day. Junior Max Oelfke is tied for 33rd at even-par 142 on a day that included a 2-under 69 in the first 18. Freshman AJ Ott is tied for 51st at 4-over 146, as all five players counted at least one round on the day.
“The boys had a terrific day!” head coach Christian Newton said. “ I'm so happy for them. We had awesome play in morning from AJ, Max, Jake, and Blake. We stumbled a bit early in the second round, but the guys responded great and stayed patient. Colton and Jake had awesome performances in Round 2. Blake and Max hung tough to grind out two much needed solid rounds. I look forward to seeing us put another good round on the board tomorrow. ”
Arizona State has a pair of players tied for the individual lead, as Blake Wagoner and Chun An Yu are two shots ahead of Staiano at 12-under 130.
Colorado State will play its final round starting at 8:20 am MT off No. 1 tee in a grouping with Arizona State, UNLV and California.
