FRESNO, Calif.- Colorado State compiled a two-round score of 724 (+4), and sits in a tie for seventh place at the 50th annual Fresno State Lexus Classic. The Rams improved from their first round score, shooting a 366 (+6) in the morning and a 358 (-2) in the afternoon.
Head Coach Christian Newton expected a slow start, and was happy to see his team recover in the second round.
“You need to see the course a few times to feel comfortable with a lot of tee shots,” said Coach Newton. “I knew it would take us time to feel comfortable here.”
Sophomore Cameron Harrell recorded six birdies in his second 18 holes, as he paced himself to shoot a 68 (-4) in the afternoon round.
“I hit the ball alright both rounds but had only 28 and 25 putts in my two rounds,” said Harrell. “My short game saved a lot of shots out there today.” Harrell carded a two-round score of 142 (-2) and is in a share of 16th place.
Senior Kirby Pettitt had the most consistent day among the team, as he recorded a 73 (+1) in his first round, followed by a 68 (-4) in his second round. Pettitt tallied a total of 10 birdies in the two rounds, and is in a tie in 9th place. Fellow senior Kory Harrell was not far behind, as his 73 (+1) in the first round was bettered by a 71 (-1) in the second round. Harrell is at even par 144 after two rounds, and is currently in a share of 25th place.
Junior Parker Edens found himself improving throughout the day, as he collected a 77 (+5) in the first round and a 74 (+2) in the second, and Edens finds himself tied for 84th place. Freshman Jordan Wetsch regressed, as his first round 71 (-1) was followed by a 78 (+6) in the second round. Wetsch currently shares 66th place. Another freshman Dominic Kieffer shot a 75 (+3) and a 77 (+5) and is tied in 88th.
Top-ranked California’s dominance was on display, as their two-round score of 694 (-26) has them in first place. California is followed by 84 Fresno State (716), 59 Arizona (718), 28 Northwestern (719), 44 BYU (723), 54 Oregon (723), 101 UC-Santa Barbara (724), 66 Colorado State (724), 52 Oregon State (725), 106 Kansas State (726), 78 UC-Irvine (728), 71 Pacific (730), 109 Nevada (731), 171 Hawaii (733), 158 Sacramento State (734), 134 Cal Poly (746) and 135 Utah (756)
