LONG BEACH, Calif. – Despite not posting their best collective performance on Day 1 of the 18th Del Walker Intercollegiate, the CSU men’s golf program is in the hunt for a Top-5 finish entering Tuesday’s final round at the Virginia Country Club.

“Today certainly wasn't our best effort but I saw a lot of great things,” said Head Coach Christian Newton. “We played a lot of steady golf but just couldn't make enough birdies to keep pace. This group has the capability to shoot a low score if we can get off to a good start and keep our confidence high. Tomorrow is a big day for us as we really need a good finish.”

As a team, the Rams opened play on Monday with a round of 284 (+4), and followed up with a team score of 283 (+3) in the afternoon, to sit alone in sixth place in the 11-team field, just two strokes behind fifth-place Wichita State (+5) and 14 strokes off the pace of tournament leader Cal State Fullerton (-7). Minnesota and UC Santa Barbara are at 4-under in a tie for second behind the Titans, while Arizona (-3) is in fourth place just ahead of the Shockers. CSU also sits one stroke ahead of host Long Beach State (+8).

Senior Parker Edens, a native of Greeley, Colo., leads the Rams after 36 holes.  Edens carded back-to-back scores of even-par 70 to sit in a tie for 15th heading into Tuesday’s final round of action. He is just one stroke outside of the top-10 and eight strokes off the pace set by the tournament leader, Cal State Fullerton’s Mark Anguiano, who fired an 8-under 132.

“I played pretty good today,” said Edens. “I was able to manage pretty well since I didn't have my best stuff. I just stayed positive while I had a rough stretch there in the second round, fought back and ended well. I’m looking forward to coming back stronger tomorrow.”

Sophomore Dominic Kieffer sits just outside the top-20 on the individual leaderboard in a tie for 22nd with a two-round score of 2-over 142.  Kieffer shot 1-over 71 in back-to-back rounds, his lowest individual scores in 14 rounds since a season-best 67 to open action at CSU’s own Ram Masters Invitational in mid-September.

Junior Cameron Harrell, the Rams’ leader in stroke average, is one shot off Kieffer’s pace in a tie for 26th.  Harrell opened with a 1-over 71 on Monday morning, and lost an additional stroke in the second round to finish Day 1 at 3-over par. It marked just the second time all season (19 rounds) that Harrell posted back-to-back scores over par.

Junior Patrick Winther and freshman Jimmy Makloski each tied for 31st, giving the Rams five competitors in the top half of the 64-player field heading into Day 2.  Winther posted two rounds of 2-over 72, while Makloski opened up with a 4-over 74, before firing an even-par 70 during the afternoon round.

Freshman Logan Iverson, competing as an individual, is tied for 58th with a two-round score of 151 (+11).

The Rams close out play at the Del Walker Intercollegiate on Tuesday morning, pairing with Arizona and Wichita State in the first groups teeing off of Hole 1 beginning at 9 a.m. MT/8 a.m. PT.
