Wahiawa, Oahu - The Colorado State University men's golf team closed its John Burns Intercollegiate in fifth place, finishing with a team score of 32-under (277-277-278=832) at the Leilehua Golf Course Friday.
CSU's Derrick Whiting finished in a tie for third place to lead the Rams with a 67-68-68=203 while freshman Zen Brown carded a 67-67-73 to finish 17th overall.
Seniors Nate Pettitt and Kevin McAlpine tied for 25th (69-70-71=210) and and 41st (74-72-66=212), respectively while Aaron Weston finished with a 78-74-73=225 to round out Ram scoring for the tournament.
SMU claimed team honors in the tournament with a three-round total of 823 with Mountain West Schools BYU, New Mexico and San Diego State coming in second, third and fourth in the event.
SMU's Brandon DeStefano won the individual title over Auburn's Jay Moseley on the second playoff hole. Both golfers finished at -14. They were followed by Andrew Scott of San Diego State and Derrick Whiting of Colorado State (-13) and Brett Lederer of Long Beach State and Oscar Alvarez of BYU (-12).
CSU competes next in the Farms Collegiate Invitational in San Diego on March 13-14.
