LIHU’E, Hawai’i – Despite a strong overall start and bounce-back performances from junior Cameron Harrell and sophomore Dominic Kieffer, the Colorado State men’s golf team slid into a tie for 11th on the second day of competition at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at Wailua Golf Course.

“We got off to a nice start, 2-under through 12 holes, but we failed to play the last holes very well,” said Head Coach Christian Newton following the Rams’ Day 2 performance. “It was nice to see Cam (Harrell) score better today. If everyone plays to their potential tomorrow we can salvage a nice finish.”

Harrell, the Rams’ season leader in stroke average, finished 1-under par with a 71 on Thursday, coming back from an opening round of 76 (+4) to ascend 32 spots on the individual leaderboard and move into a tie for 35th.

“I had a lot better day today,” said Harrell. “I saved a lot of shots around the green and stayed steady all day.”

A native of Colorado Springs, Colo., Harrell sits just behind senior Parker Edens who is pacing the Rams through 18 holes.  Edens opened with a 2-under 70 on Day 1, and birdied the Par-5 No. 1 to open his round on Thursday, before sliding just outside the top 20 with three bogeys scattered throughout his second round.  He sits just one stroke outside of the top 20, and four strokes out of the top 10 with a two-round score of 145 (+1).

Junior Patrick Winther and sophomore Dominic Kieffer rounded out the scoring for the Rams on Day 2. Winther, shot 4-over in the second round to slide into a tie for 48th at 5-over (149), while Kieffer jumped from 75th into a tie for 56th with a Round 2 score of 73 (+1), four strokes better than his opening-round effort. Kieffer was 2-under through 10 holes, but carded three bogeys over his final six holes.

Freshman Jimmy Makloski is one stroke off Kieffer’s pace and sits in a tie for 64th with a two-round total of 151 (+7) after firing a 5-over 77 in Round 2. Classmate Alec Bone, is three strokes behind Makloski in a tie for 77th, second among individual competitors.

As a team, the Rams sit two strokes outside of the top-10 heading into Friday’s final round, knotted with MW foe Nevada, behind Pacific (586).

“Everybody needs to get off to a good start and with a strong finish we'll move right up the leaderboard,” added Harrell.

BYU’s Justin Keiley sits alone atop the individual leaderboard with a two-round score of  134 (-10), ahead of Cal’s Joel Stalter (-6).

Cal continues to lead the tournament, with a two-round team score of 560 (-16), nine strokes ahead of BYU and Texas A&M (569). New Mexico (577) is fourth, while UTEP and Arizona are tied for fifth at 4-over (580).

Competition resumes Friday morning with a shotgun start slated for 11:30 a.m. MST/8:30 a.m. HAST. Live scoring throughout the John A. Burns Intercollegiate is available at www.GolfStatResults.com.
