Colorado State Head Coach Jamie Bermel has earned the reputation as one of the nation's premier college golf coaches. Now entering his 11th year at Colorado State, Bermel has guided the Rams to nine NCAA appearances since his arrival in Fort Collins. In 2008, he led the Rams to their first Mountain West title. Coach Bermel has helped develop the Colorado State program into one of national prominence. Since joining the Rams, Bermel's squads have compiled 135 team top-10 finishes. He helped guide the team to unprecedented success in the 2003-04 season and was named 2004 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year, an honor he also earned after the 2007-08 season. Under the guidance of Bermel, the Rams have won 16 team titles. Last season alone Bermel's squad added 12 team top-10 finishes and a school record five first-place finishes. The team won the Falcon Invitational, Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, Del Walker Intercollegiate, Sycuan Collegiate Invitational and the Barona Collegiate Cup. Three of his Rams held individual honors in those tournaments. Bermel came to Colorado State after having served as the head coach at Iowa State, where he led the Cyclones to the NCAA Regionals in 1999. During two seasons in Ames, ISU won two tournaments and had nine top-five finishes. Prior to coaching at ISU, Bermel spent five years as the head coach at Drake. There, he led the Bulldogs to NCAA appearances in 1996 and `97, including a 23rd-place finish in the `97 tournament. In that same year, the team won the Missouri Valley Conference title. In his years as a collegiate coach, Bermel has helped develop the games of a number of players that have moved on to the next level. Three of Bermel's former players are currently on tour, including 2007 Masters champion Zach Johnson, who competed for Bermel at Drake. Jason Knutzon played under Bermel at Iowa State and currently plays on the Asian Tour. Martin Laird, a former CSU standout who played under Bermel from 2000-04, competed on the Nationwide Tour in 2005 and 2007 and is currently playing on the PGA Tour. Bermel is a 1986 graduate of Central College in Pella, Iowa, and received a master's degree from Purdue University in 1988. Jamie and his wife, Jacque, have three children: Emily (13), Jack (11) and Charlie (9).
