Barrett earned midseason all-American fourth-team honors on Thursday
Oct. 18, 2013
CLEVELAND, Ohio - Senior linebacker Shaquil Barrett has saved the best for last and continues to earn the honors and awards to prove it.
On Thursday, Barrett earned a spot on the midseason All-America fourth-team from Phil Steele's College Football Preview.
The senior linebacker, who has racked up 42 tackles, including 12.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks, is the lone Mountain West defensive player to earn all-American recognition.
"This is a step towards a dream I've had since I was a child," Barrett said. "Growing up playing video games and watching football, I always wanted to be an All-America but most importantly, we have to go out and win some football games and finish the season strong."
Barrett, a native of Baltimore, Md., leads the nation with 12.5 tackles for loss and is third with 6.5 sacks. He is also one of two players this season to block multiple kicks in a single game, joining Demarcus Lawrence from Boise State.
Barrett caught the attention of the nation at the end of September when he registered 13 tackles, including 4.5 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, and two forced fumbles vs. UTEP. This performance secured a spot on the Bronko Nagurski watch list, an award given annually to the nation's top defensive player.
Earlier this week Barrett was named first-team midseason All-Mountain West by Phil Steele's College Football Preview.
