FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Eight Colorado State football players have received midseason All-Mountain West recognition from Phil Steele's College Football Preview. Among the eight are three first-team selections: Defensive end Shaquil Barrett, linebacker Cory James and punter Pete Kontodiakos.
Gillmore, Richburg and Kontodiakos were 2011 All-Mountain West honorees by vote of the league's coaches and media. That trio, along with Barrett and Gragert, were among CSU's 11 players who received 2012 preseason All-MW nods from Phil Steele.
James, Roberts and Tanyi are three Rams who have emerged in their first season on the field for Colorado State. James, a redshirt freshman from Del Rio, Texas (Del Rio HS), ranks second in the MW in sacks (No. 23 NCAA) with five, and sixth in the MW in tackles for loss (6).
Roberts, a redshirt sophomore from Littleton, Colo. (Mullen HS), is tied for second in the Mountain West in field-goal percentage (83%; 5-6) and has the longest field goal in the conference this year, a 48-yarder vs. Colorado on Sept. 1, in his first collegiate game.
Tanyi, a summer transfer from Appalachian State who is enrolled in graduate school for his final year of eligibility, leads the Rams--and all Mountain West defensive linemen--in tackles with 45. His average of 7.5 tackles per game ranks fourth among all defensive linemen in the nation.
Kontodiakos, a candidate for the Ray Guy Award, ranks ninth in the nation in punting average (46.1) and has three of the four longest punts in the Mountain West this season--73, 72 and 69 yards. His 73-yarder at Air Force on Sept. 29 is the longest by a Mountain West punter in 2012, and second-longest nationally.
Barrett is tied for third in the Mountain West in sacks (3), Gillmore is tied for the team lead with two touchdown receptions and Richburg and Gragert anchor a CSU offensive line that has paved the way for three different running backs to rush for at least 65 yards in a game this season.
The Rams (1-5, 0-2) travel to face San Diego State (3-3, 1-1) on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 4:45 p.m. (MT).
