DALLAS, Texas – Senior linebacker Shaquil Barrett continues to garner weekly honors after last Saturday’s performance against UTEP.
Barrett, a 6-foot-2, 250-pound native of Baltimore, Md., earned the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week award for what the Football Writers Association of America deem the top individual effort by any defensive player in the nation. The senior linebacker registered 13 tackles, including four tackles for loss and three sacks, and two forced fumbles in Colorado State’s 59-42 victory.
In the third quarter, after UTEP had rattled off 21 consecutive points to tie the game at 28, Barrett decided he was going to step up and make a play. In the next three plays Barrett recorded two sacks and two forced fumbles, the second of which led to a safety. This swung momentum in favor of the green and gold and helped the Rams score 24 unanswered points of their own.
This is the fourth weekly honor for Barrett, who earned Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week, College Football Performance Awards National Defensive Player of the Week and National Football Foundation Colorado Chapter Player of the Week honors on Monday.
Barrett is believed to be only the fourth player in CSU history to earn a national weekly honor, joining Nordly Capi (Bronko Nagurski Defensive POW, 2011), Dale Carr (National Defensive POW by Sports Illustrated, 1986) and Jeff Harper (co-winner of Associated Press National POW, 1982).
