Kicker Jared Roberts celebrates with teammates after connecting on all three field-goal attempts in CSU's 22-17 win.
Sept. 3, 2012
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Colorado State players Cory James and Jared Roberts join Nevada’s Stefphon Jefferson as Mountain West Players of the Week for games through Sept. 1. Jefferson earns Offensive Player of the Week honors, while James garners the Defensive Player award and Roberts receives Special Teams recognition. This marks the first career MW weekly accolade for all three players.
The Rams have multiple players win the honor in the same week for the first time since the fourth week of the 2011 season when Chris Nwoke shared the offensive honor, Shaquil Barrett shared for defense and Tanner Hedstrom earned the special teams award.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Cory James, COLORADO STATE
Freshman, Linebacker, Del Rio, Texas/Del Rio HS
In his first career start, Cory James compiled seven total tackles, including six solo stops, and a forced fumble as Colorado State defeated in-state rival Colorado, 22-17. The freshman linebacker from Del Rio, Texas, finished with three sacks and four tackles for loss, becoming the first Ram to record three or more sacks in his first career game. James’ first sack came on Colorado’s first possession, forcing the Buffaloes back 12 yards. His second sack came midway through the second quarter to set up a third-down and long. Two plays later, James hit Colorado quarterback Jordan Webb from behind, jarring the ball loose before Lanston Tanyi recovered for CSU, ending an eight-play drive for the Buffaloes. The CSU victory halted an eight-game losing streak dating back to last season and marked the Rams’ first win against Colorado since a 23-17 triumph in Boulder in 2009.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jared Roberts, COLORADO STATE
Sophomore, Kicker, Littleton, Colo./Mullen HS
Playing in his first collegiate game, Jared Roberts contributed 10 points in Colorado State’s 22-17 win over in-state rival Colorado. The sophomore kicker from Littleton, Colo., connected on all three of his field goal attempts and was 1-for-2 in point-after tries. His first field goal of 47 yards gave CSU a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter, while his second field goal came with 6:39 left to play and the Rams trailing, 17-16. The 48-yard field goal was the longest by a CSU player in the Rocky Mountain Showdown since Mike Brown hit a 49-yarder in 1988. Roberts’ final attempt of 32 yards with 2:56 remaining in the game accounted for the final margin of victory. The CSU victory halted an eight-game losing streak that dated back to last season.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
STEFPHON JEFFERSON, NEVADA
Junior, Running Back, Visalia, Calif./El Diamante HS
Junior Stefphon Jefferson carried the ball 34 times for career-highs of 147 yards and three touchdowns in Nevada’s season-opening 31-24 road win at California. The running back from Visalia, Calif., accounted for three of the Wolf Pack’s four rushing touchdowns, scoring from two yards out on each TD. His final touchdown came with 36 seconds left and proved to be the game-winner. Jefferson was the only running back to carry the ball in the contest, and his 34 attempts were the most by a Pack player since Luke Lippincott had 36 against Utah State on 2007.
