Practice notes: Rams pipe crowd noise into indoor facility
Aug. 25, 2010
2010 football ticket information By Zak Gilbert FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State’s football team on Wednesday capitalized on another benefit associated with its new $13 million Indoor Practice Facility. Halfway through practice, the Rams jogged from their outdoor facility to the massive, hangar-like indoor building, then blasted crowd noise throughout the balance of their workout. “Crowd noise helps,” said Head Coach Steve Fairchild, whose team figures to play in front of its largest 2010 crowd on Sept. 4 against Colorado. “It helped our quarterback have to operate. I thought it affected our special teams as much as it affected our offense. We’ll probably do it again next Wednesday just because, again, we’re so new. To give you an example, we were checking a play at the line, the quarterback checked it, he walked down the line, telling the line, then forgot to tell the running back. It’s good. It’s good but we’re new; we need to do it again." And Fairchild wants the Rams to have practiced every conceivable situation, including crowd noise, before they get on their bus for Denver. ”We get in Mile High, up in that one end zone, it’s loud. It might affect us. At least this way, we know we’ve practiced it.” CSU’s 2010 receivers for 1,000: Alex Trebek, the host of Jeopardy!, might say, “48 and six.” The correct response? "What are the amount of respective career catches and career starts among wide receivers on the 2010 CSU roster?" No question, the position appears to be a weak link, at least on paper. But several CSU receivers, including Matt Yemm, Byron Steele, Lou Greenwood, Tyson Liggett, T.J. Borcky and Byron Steele, have stood out during fall camp. Fairchild has remarked several times since spring practice how pleased he is with the position group, and attributes much of it to the coach he brought back to CSU in December, Dan Hammerschmidt.
“Effort every play,” Fairchild said. “I knew we were going to make mistakes, and we still are, both the quarterback and at receiver, but you can develop a quarterback if the receivers are going hard and I’ve really liked our effort. And I knew I was going to get that when I hired Dan. I’ve worked with Dan before. He’s a very, very talented coach.” Fairchild also said that CSU receivers have to block, hustle in and out of the huddle, and be accountable, or they won’t play. Moss sidelined: Fairchild said redshirt freshman tight end Cameron Moss will be out at least two weeks with a dislocated knee cap, sustained Tuesday. On deck: The Rams will scrimmage on Thursday at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium, but the session is closed. CSU returns to its on-campus practice fields Friday for a 4 p.m. session, followed by another closed practice, the mock game, Saturday back at the stadium. |
