Fairchild said he felt much better about the quarterbacks after Tuesday’s practice but said there’s still no definitive timetable in naming a starter.
“I think I’ll know when it’s right,” Fairchild said. “It’ll hit me.”
Also wearing a red jersey at practice was Klay Kubiak. Kubiak was able to begin light throwing Tuesday, but is at least a week away from full clearance, and likely won’t be available for the season opener against CU.
Fairchild said the Rams have added seven walk-ons to their roster, which now has 112 athletes. NCAA rules only allow the team to have 105 players on its roster prior to the start of classes, but once classes began on Monday, the team was allowed to expand its roster to a number based on annual Title IX numbers.
Junior Eric Peitz donned a new number at practice Tuesday. Peitz is back to the number he wore the past two seasons, 45. Another notable change is true freshman Chris Nwoke (pronounced WOH-kay) who changed his number to 11. The team’s equipment staff needed to make the changes because those players could not be on the field during the game at the same time as other players with duplicate numbers. For instance, Peitz could be on the field with the field-goal unit when Nick Oppenneer (also No. 11) is holding for placements.
The Rams will be back on the practice fields Wednesday afternoon.
