FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Due to inclement weather in the forecast, the Rams made the decision just before practice Friday to move the workout to their indoor practice facility.
That did not stop the team from getting all it needed to get accomplished, however, as players were full of energy and eager to get through all of the drills.
“I think it was great with how the guys approached it,” McElwain said of the team’s practice. “We did some really good things on defense, especially in the two-minute and third downs today.”
Early on in fall camp, McElwain has stressed the importance of the tempo that the team practices at. On Friday, that was no exception.
“I really like the tempo and the pace that they are getting after it,” McElwain said. “I think what this team is starting to do is understand how preparing against each other is really important and how it helps.”
Fall Camp Notebook:
New Uniforms Unveiled: The team’s new Under Armour uniforms were unveiled this morning in a video produced by the athletics marketing department posted on YouTube. The video, which had been viewed close to 4,000 times by the end of practice this evening and was very popular among fans and players alike, can be seen here.
First Time Starters: In Jim McElwain’s first year as head coach he mixed a veteran nucleus with a host of young talent that helped lead significant improvement over the second half of the season. In all, the 2012 Rams had 18 players make their first collegiate start, tied for 8th-most in NCAA FBS. Included in that group were four players who saw significant game action as true freshmen: LB Kevin Davis, WR/PR Joe Hansley, DB Nick Januska and DB Jasen Oden.
The Rams will look for a these young players to continue the momentum they gained from last year into the 2013 campaign.
“You see them being more vocal and definitive with their checks,” McElwain said. “I’ve been really happy with how much better they are at disguising what they are doing.”
Donning Pads: Saturday’s practice will mark the first day of fall camp that the team will wear full pads. Thus far, players have only worn ‘shells’, comprised of shoulder pads, a helmet and shorts.
One More Number Change: Redshirt-freshman defensive back Brandon Henrie, who previously wore number 6, is now wearing 18.
Saturday Schedule: The Rams will be back on the field on Saturday at 2:15 p.m. for Practice No. 5 of preseason camp.
