FORT COLLINS, Colo.—The first practice in pads will not come until Saturday, but today marked another step in the process as players donned shells for the two-hour practice.
“You know what, we got better today,” Head Coach Jim McElwain said after today’s practice. “I thought the defense, particularly, was good in two-minute and in third-down today, which is kind of a point of emphasis now.”
Just having shoulder pads on for the first time seemed to bring a heightened level of intensity that could be felt all around the practice field.
“I think that really elevated our practice level today, because guys were putting the pads on for the first time in a while,” McElwain offered.
The Rams entered camp relatively healthy at all positions. However, where any time is missed due to injuries, the coaching staff is able to get a look at what depth they have at those positions as those players gain experience.
“There are only a certain number of reps out there, so to get the quality reps with some of these young guys we’re really able to develop some depth,” McElwain said.
Fall Camp Notebook:
Wide Receivers Stepping up: Austin Gray, who moved back from safety to his original position of wide receiver before spring drills, again showed flashes of improvement in today’s practice, Gray has also stepped up to become a leader and show some of the younger guys on the team how to become a better player.
“This is something that I’m really excited about, because he (Austin Gray) took that move and really owned it and he’s been really good for that receiver room as far as how you go about your business and how you develop your craft, and I’ve been really proud of him,” McElwain said.
Number Changes: Several players have changed uniform numbers: Cornerback DeAndre Elliott (13; was 19), wide receiver Sammie Long (19; was 87), wide receiver Richard Pixley (13; was 15), kicker Jared Roberts (47; was 94), tight end Trent Sieg (46; was 47) and Xavier Williams (84; was 23).
Friday Schedule: The Rams will again practice at 3:45 p.m. on campus. It will be the Rams’ last day in shells before practice in full pads on Saturday.
