Greg Myers at College Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Dec. 2012
Aug. 5, 2013
FORT COLLINS—Greg Myers, one of the most decorated student-athletes in Colorado State University history, will be honored during halftime activities of the Rams’ first home game of 2013 at Hughes Stadium Sept. 14 vs. Cal Poly.
His jersey number, 3, and name will also be displayed on the press box, alongside Thurman “Fum” McGraw and Eddie Hanna during ceremonies on the field.
Myers, during his career from 1992-95, established himself as one of the school’s all-time greats both as a student and an athlete.
“As one of the most decorated student-athletes in Colorado State University history, Greg epitomizes the ideals we embrace,” said Jack Graham, Director of Athletics for Colorado State. “He represented our university as a person of character and integrity. Greg embraced his education with a mission to serve our country and the world. He also was a winner, who did so with commitment, discipline and hard work.”
His induction into the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame on Dec. 4, 2012, is a fitting capstone to a remarkable career. In April of 2012, Myers was also inducted into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame, and became a member of the CSU Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
"It's a tremendous honor and very humbling to be recognized by CSU in this manner,” Myers said. “Individual awards come from being surrounded by great teams, athletes and people like my coaches. During my time at CSU I was fortunate to have all of them."
Myers remains the only player in Western Athletic Conference history to be named first-team all-conference four years in a row, and earned Academic All-Conference honors four times as well.
Myers, who grew up in nearby Windsor, Colo., was twice named to the All-America and Academic All-America teams.
Following his senior season, he became the first player in school history to win a national award when he was named the winner of the Thorpe Award in 1995. He was honored during ESPN’s College Football Awards Show in Disney World in Orlando, Fla. That same night, he also was named the Honda Scholar Athlete of the Year for his academic accomplishments, and was later awarded a post-graduate scholarship from the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame.
Myers helped the Rams to back-to-back WAC championships and berths in the Holiday Bowl in 1994 and ’95. The Rams finished the 1994 season ranked among the nation’s Top 25.
Myers concluded his Colorado State career among the school’s all-time leaders in pass interceptions and total tackles. He also set he school and conference records for career punt return yardage.
Following the completion of his CSU career, he was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the NFL Draft, then proceeded to start in the team’s secondary and later also played for the Dallas Cowboys.
Greg is now a practicing anesthesiologist in Denver, having completed medical school following his professional playing career.
The Sept. 14 game vs. Cal Poly is schedule to kick off at 1:30 p.m. MT at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium. It is the first of six home games for the Rams in 2013.
