FORT COLLINS, Colo.--Colorado State senior linebacker Aaron Davis was named Monday to the preseason watch list for the 2014 Butkus Award, which recognizes the most outstanding linebacker in college football.
Davis, 6-0, 220 pounds, is one of 53 athletes on the watch list, and one of just three from the Mountain West. The 2013 winner of the Butkus Award was Alabama linebacker C.J. Mosely, who was the No. 17 overall selection in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens.
A senior, Davis has started 26 of the 37 games in which he's played in his CSU career and made 12 tackles for loss (-36 yards) among his 227 career tackles (120 solo).
In 2013 Davis started every game for the Rams for the second year in a row and finished second on the team with 120 tackles (63 solo), including seven tackles for loss (-18). He also recorded five quarterback hurries, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Davis posted a career-high 13 tackles vs. San Jose State on Oct. 12 and played a key role in helping the Rams defense to allow only two 100-yard individual rushers and to prevent an opponent from scoring multiple rushing touchdowns in a game.
Davis is a key cog in the Rams' experienced corps of returning linebackers that includes senior captain and 2013 honorable mention All-MW selection Max Morgan, as well as junior Cory James. Davis, Morgan, James and their teammates report for preseason camp Aug. 3, and take the field for their first practice of the 2014 season on Monday, Aug. 4. The season-opening Rocky Mountain showdown versus Colorado kicks off Friday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. at Sports Authority Field at Mile High in Denver.
Rams season tickets for 2014 are on sale now. A full season package starts as low as $130 and includes a ticket to the Rocky Mountain Showdown and all six home games at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium. Individual tickets and mini-plan packages that include the Rocky Mountain Showdown and two other games are also on sale. All tickets can be purchased by calling 800-491-7267 or online here.
