FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Athlon Sports preseason All-Mountain West teams were announced on Tuesday and 10 Colorado State football players received recognition.
Tight end Kivon Cartwright, offensive lineman Ty Sambrailo and kicker Jared Roberts were the three Rams who earned first-team honors.
For Cartwright and Roberts, this is there second first-team preseason nod after earning first-team All-Mountain West accolades at the beginning of the month by Phil Steele.
Cartwright, a native of Pueblo, Colo., is coming off a career year in 2013, earning honorable mention All-Mountain West while catching 27 passes for 462 yards and a team-high six touchdown reception. The senior-to-be played alongside third-round NFL draft selection Crockett Gillmore in 2013.
Sambrailo, the Rams’ lone returning offensive lineman from a 2013 unit that powered last year’s offense to school records for yards per game (470.8) and total points (507), earned first-team preseason honors for the first time in his career. The 6-foot-5, 310-pound tackle, recorded 47 knockdown blocks and graded out over 89-percent in every game of 2013. Entering the 2014 season, Sambrailo (2,514) is one of 10 active offensive linemen to play in over 2,500 career snaps.
Roberts, earned first-team All-Mountain West honors by vote of coaches and media in 2013, as well as being a Lou Groza Award semifinalist. Roberts holds the school record for career field goal percentage (.882), a number that ranks fifth among active FBS kickers. Last season, Roberts connected on 21-of-24 field goals, including a career best 54-yarder vs. Air Force. He was also a percent 58-for-58 on PATS, the most made and attempted PATs in school history.
Wide receiver Rashard Higgins and linebacker Cory James were named to Athlon Sports’ second team. Quarterback Garrett Grayson, defensive end Joe Kawulok, linebacker Max Morgan, punter Hayden Hunt and punt return specialist Tyree Simmons earned third-team honors.
The 10 CSU players earning preseason honors is the second-most in the Mountain West, behind Boise State’s 11 selections.
