Athlon Sports All-MW Preseason Team

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Twelve Colorado State football players were listed on Athlon Sports’ 2017 All-Mountain West preseason teams, including center Jake Bennett and wide receiver Michael Gallup receiving first-team recognition.

CSU’s 12 selections are tied for the second-most in the league with Wyoming. Only San Diego State (14) has more players across Athlon’s four teams.

Gallup and Bennett are two of seven CSU offensive players to be listed. Zach Golditch (third team) joins Bennett to put two Rams offensive lineman on the list. The duo will be protecting for quarterback Nick Stevens and blocking for running backs Dalyn Dawkins and Izzy Matthews, who all landed on the third team. Wide receiver Olabisi Johnson rounded out the offensive selections on the fourth team.

Three CSU linebackers were recognized, with Josh Watson chosen to the second team and both Evan Colorito and Deonte Clyburn winding up on the third team. Defensive lineman Darnell Thompson (third team) was also listed, along with kicker Wyatt Bryan (fourth team), representing CSU as its only special teams selection.

Bennett, who was recently named to the Rimington Trophy 2017 Spring Watch List, was named Second Team All-Mountain West by the league’s media and coaches last season, and also landed on Phil Steele’s All-MW second team after starting all 13 games at center. The Lakewood, Colo., native helped anchor an offensive line that allowed just 1.0 sacks per game in 2016, ranking eighth in the NCAA. CSU’s offense also ranked 12th in the country in passing efficiency, 31st in rushing offense, 28th in scoring offense and 30th in total offense.

Gallup, in his first year of football at the Division I level, earned first-team All-MW honors after recording 76 catches for 1,272 yards and 14 touchdowns. His touchdown total ranked eighth in the NCAA and was the second-most in a season in CSU history. His receiving yardage total was 14th in the nation and tied for the league lead. Gallup’s productivity continued to rise as the season wore on, including scoring a touchdown in each of his final games while averaging 128 yards per game over that stretch.
