FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Thursday was the final practice for the Rams before Saturday’s Green and Gold Spring Game.
The coaching staff kept it light as the players dressed out in shorts and jerseys but the team was still able to get a lot accomplished and Head Coach Jim McElwain left practice feeling encouraged.
“We got a lot done today,” McElwain said. “I was excited about the tempo. When I first got here every time they went no pads they just stood and looked at each other. They didn’t realize that we actually had to practice. So to see the tempo and how they attacked it - they stayed on their feet but played fast and handled the situations we are able to use indoors here. These guys are starting to get it and that’s all a part of developing an organization and a program and I was happy about it.”
He spoke about Lovett’s continued improvement and how Hansley was able to quickly come back from a nagging ankle injury.
McElwain didn’t spend long reminiscing about spring ball as his attention now turns to Saturday’s spring game at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium.
The coaching staff split the players into two teams and from there a coin toss will determine which team wears each jersey, dresses in what locker room and east or west sideline. Just like last season, the winning team will be treated to a streak dinner with ‘all the fixings,’ as McElwain described it, while the losers will eat beans and wieners.
The second-year head coach has said all spring that the quarterback battle will carry on into the summer and most likely into fall but for Saturday Garrett Grayson will be operating the first-team offense. Donnell Alexander, the Rams rushing leader last season, will join Grayson in the backfield. This group will have the second-team defense.
Admission and parking is free for fans and a free pancake breakfast, presented by the CSU Spirit Committee, will begin at 10 a.m. Due to the weather Ram Town will not be open. Kickoff is 12 p.m. and McElwain says the game will feature four, 12-minute quarters and occasional situational periods.
After the game fans are invited down onto the field for autographs and pictures with the players.
Can’t make the game?: Fans who can’t make Saturday’s spring game can tune in to 105.5 ESPN Denver for the call.
AGGIES TO RAMS: John Hirn, author of Aggies to Rams, will be selling his book at Saturday’s game. Fans interested in purchasing a copy may stop by Hirn’s tent located next to the CSU Bookstore trailer on the south concourse. In a new offer this year, fans who sign up or renew their Ram Club membership with a minimum donation of $100 will receive a $5 discount on the purchase of a copy of Aggies to Rams.
High praise: After practice McElwain lauded the Colorado State facilities and grounds crew for their tireless work to clear the snow from the field and stands at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium. 'Coach Mac' said without them the game wouldn't have been able to go on as planned.
