FORT COLLINS, Colo. – After weather forced the Rams into the indoor practice facility earlier in the spring, Head Coach Jim McElwain wasn’t satisfied with how the team adjusted to the new environment.
On Tuesday, snow forced Colorado State indoors but this time McElwain thought the team adjusted to the change in environment well.
“I felt like we got a lot done,” McElwain said. “It was a lot better than the last time we came in here. I thought we got some good work done.”
Even though the team was restricted with space, the second-year coach saw a lot of good competition. This was key as the Rams are in the midst of their final week of spring ball.
“There was a good spirit. We were in thud mode but guys were poppin’ well; they were competing. The thing I liked today was I saw a lot of good competition between the offense and the defense. That is something you really want, especially this late in spring camp,” McElwain said.
Garrett Grayson practiced with the first-team offense but McElwain told the media not to expect a quarterback to be named at the end of spring.
“I think it’s something we need to see going into the summer and see who takes control of this team when these guys are out working in the middle of the heat by themselves,” McElwain said.
As spring camp slowly winds down and the team prepares for Saturday’s annual Green and Gold Spring Game, quarterback Conner Smith has seen a lot of improvement.
“We’ve improved immensely. It is night and day how much better we are at this point this spring than we were at this point last spring. It has gone well and we are looking to wrap it up Saturday and have a good spring game,” Smith said.
The Rams are back on the field Thursday afternoon for one final practice before Saturday’s spring game.
2013 Spring Game: The Rams will conclude their second spring camp under McElwain on Saturday, April 20 as fans are invited to attend the annual Green vs. Gold game.
Starting at 10 a.m., fans are invited to a free pancake breakfast put on by the CSU Spirit Committee and two hours later the spring game will kick off. Due to weather Ram Town will not be open. Admission is free and fans will have an opportunity to purchase 2013 season tickets and take pictures with CAM the Ram and cheerleaders.

Aggies to Rams: John Hirn will be selling Aggies to Rams at Saturday’s spring game. Fans interested in purchasing the book can stop by Hirn’s tent located next to the CSU Bookstore trailer on the south concourse.
New this year, fans that sign up or renew their Ram Club membership with a minimum donation of $100 will receive $5 off their Aggies to Rams copy.
More Quotes From McElwain
(on Shaq Bell)
“Since I’ve gotten here, out of all the guys, I’ve seen probably more growth in this guy from the standpoint of taking care of all parts of his life and that’s really good to see. I really feel like he is a guy that now has the ability to play different spots for us, which we need. He’s going to be a guy who is going to take a lot of reps, play a lot of downs and not go through those hiccups where maybe, he takes a play off or two.”
“He’s not one of those vocal rah-rah guys but he’s really paid attention in practice and taken every rep with the kind of work ethic we are looking for.”
(on leadership at linebacker)
“It’s something we’ve talked to that group about. Because of the experience, number one, and the lack of experience in front of you, you guys have to step up and communicate everything. I’ve been really happy with that and Cory James, for example, is really taking some strides to every down play and obviously from Shaq Barrett. Those inside guys, I think AD (Aaron Davis) has taken a step forward.”
