First sections of playing surface installed at new stadium

April 13, 2017

The playing surface at Colorado State University's new on-campus stadium began to be installed today, initiating a process that is expected to be complete in less than one month. The design for the new Sonny Lubick Field was unveiled Monday, and crews began the process of laying down the first pieces of the Shaw Sports Turf material around mid-day Thursday.

The manufactured sections of turf for the initial installation will display only the yard lines. The large Rams head logo that will appear at mid-field, as well as Mountain West logos, hash marks, numbers, lettering and other detail pieces will be sewn in later in the installation process.

The playing surface will feature Shaw Sports Turf’s PowerBlade Pro system, which uses Shaw’s revolutionary Bolt fiber. Bolt is a stronger, more resilient monofilament fiber, featuring a lightning bolt shape which creates a stronger vertical axis that causes fibers to stand upright for less breakdown and increased durability. Bolt is specifically built for performance and to reflect light for a lower luster and more natural looking field.

As each section is aligned and set in place, measurements are made between every five-yard distance and the excess material is cut off to prepare the adjoining sections to be glued to a connecting piece of base material. Crews will initially work their way south from the 50-yard line, then start north from the 50-yard line.

When that step is complete, the infill will be spread over the entire surface and worked into the base of the turf. The infill material allows for optimum traction and performance, and allows for proper drainage.

The entire perimeter of the turf surface will connect to the base of the lower stadium bowl, and fasten to strengthen it in place.

Substantial completion of the $220 million stadium is scheduled for June 9, 2017. The football program will begin to move into its new offices, locker room, weight room and training room in mid-June. Grand opening for the 41,000-capacity stadium is set for the Rams' season opener Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017, vs. Oregon State.
