GLENDALE, Colo. – For the second consecutive year the Rams made the hour-and-half drive south to Infinity Park for a two hour practice.
With over 43,000 alumni living in the Denver area, Athletic Director Jack Graham and Head Coach Jim McElwain have made it a point of emphasis to connect with that proud group of Rams.
“I just think it’s a great event and something we’ll keep doing,” McElwain said. “I think the people who come out here and have a great time - it’ll just do nothing but get bigger.”
Safety Trent Matthews had a similar opinion to McElwain.
“I like coming out here. The only thing I didn’t like was the drive, it was kind of long, but I’ll do anything for the fans,” Matthews said.
Fans that came out to Friday’s practice saw the Rams run through individual drills and at the end were treated to a brief first-team offense vs. first-team defense scrimmage.
Defensive back Nick Januska highlighted the brief 11v11 action with an interception and a long return down the sideline.
McElwain wanted the team to continue to work through the fundamentals as the team preps for a private scrimmage on Sunday. He also wanted to see how his team played in a different environment. Friday was treated as a road game for Colorado State and McElwain was happy with how the team performed.
The second-year coach noticed the performance that Garrett Grayson stringed together Friday night and was particularly impressed with how calm the junior quarterback was. Grayson, who like all quarterbacks has high standards, told the media after practice that he did something well but wasn’t satisfied with how he did Friday.
“I felt fine. I don’t think today was the best practice I’ve had this spring. I think, to my standards, I wasn’t real happy with it. I didn’t make terrible reads, I was comfortable in the pocket and the o-line was giving me time but overall there were some things I wasn’t happy with. I feel like it wasn’t my best practice of the spring, to be honest,” Grayson said.
Grayson and the rest of the Rams will have a chance to improve on Sunday as they have a private scrimmage, which will be a similar format to last Saturday’s scrimmage. CSURams.com will have a recap and stats following Sunday’s workout.
