FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Joey O'Connor, a 6-foot-3, 305-pound offensive lineman from Windsor, Colo., has been accepted to Colorado State University and will join the football team for the 2013 season. O'Connor will transfer from Ohio State, where he was redshirted as a freshman in 2012 after suffering a season-ending knee injury in fall camp.
O'Connor was a prep star at Windsor High School, just 15 miles from the Colorado State campus. He initially signed a letter of intent with Ohio State after being rated the No. 12 offensive tackle prospect in the nation by Rivals.com and a four-star recruit. He was a starter on the offensive line for four years, earning all-state honors as a junior and senior.
"We are very excited to welcome Joey O'Connor to Colorado State University and to our football family," said head coach Jim McElwain. "He has chosen to come back to Colorado, and be closer to home, and the fact that he chose Colorado State speaks volumes about this university and the outstanding things happening in our football program."
O'Connor played hockey for 11 years before concentrating on football in high school, and was named Colorado's 2011 state 3A player of the year. An Under Armour All-American, who was the No. 1 player in Colorado according to ESPNU and the No. 2 player by the Denver Post and Rivals.com, O'Connor was ranked just beyond the Rivals.com Top 100. He was a SuperPrep all-Midlands selection, and capped his career by helping coach Chris Jones' Wizards team win the 2011 state championship.
A leader off the field as well, O'Connor was student body president at Windsor High.
