Rams name Meyer offensive coordinator
Jan. 8, 2010
By Zak Gilbert FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Moving closer to solidifying his 2010 coaching staff, Colorado State Head Coach Steve Fairchild Friday named Pat Meyer offensive coordinator/offensive line coach. "Pat Meyer is quietly among the best coaches in the country and we're fortunate to have him here at his alma mater," Fairchild said. "Since Day 1, he has been a cornerstone in our offense. He's had a lead role each of his two years here on our staff." Meyer, 37, officially joined the Colorado State coaching staff on Jan. 14, 2008. Now, with the addition of wide receivers coach Dan Hammerschmidt, Meyer is one of six CSU coaches who played previously for the Rams, joining Fairchild, running backs coach Anthoney Hill, quarterbacks coach Daren Wilkinson and graduate assistant Darrell Ballard. Last season, with Meyer serving as offensive line coach and run game coordinator, his line produced team MVP Cole Pemberton, one of four CSU offensive linemen who received all-conference mention. All four, including Lombardi Award candidate Shelley Smith, Rimington Trophy candidate Tim Walter, and ironman Adrian Martinez, are expected to challenge for spots on NFL rosters this spring.
That line also paved the way for five combined 100-yard rushing efforts in 2009, from two CSU players: Leonard Mason and John Mosure. In Meyer's two seasons, including Gartrell Johnson's six in 2008, the Rams have 11 total 100-yard rushing games. In 2008, two of Meyer's CSU players received all-conference honors, Smith and Walter. His line helped Johnson lead the Mountain West in rushing (113.5 yards per game) and rank 13th in the nation, becoming CSU's first conference rushing champion since Cecil Sapp in 2002. Johnson was selected in the fourth round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Among the Western Athletic Conference's most consistent offensive linemen, Meyer as a CSU player earned all-league honors three straight years and helped Hill and the Rams to a magical 1994 season that ended in the Holiday Bowl against Michigan. After signing with the NFL's Arizona Cardinals as a free agent in 1995, he played one season (1996) in the Arena Football League, with the St. Louis Stampede. He has eight years of experience as a strength and conditioning coach in major collegiate weight rooms. At North Carolina State, he helped to condition and train five NFL draft choices, including first-rounders Mario Williams, the No. 1 overall selection in 2006, Philip Rivers, Manny Lawson and John McCargo. Meyer also serves as the staff's chief recruiter in the talent-rich state of Florida. He and his wife, Erin, have three daughters, and make their home in Fort Collins. He graduated from Colorado State with a degree in exercise and sports science in 1995.
