Dec. 30, 2013
FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Colorado State junior guard Daniel Bejarano has been named the Mountain West Player of the Week, the first such honor of his career at Colorado State, and the first weekly conference honor for the Rams this season. The Phoenix, Ariz., native posted back-to-back double-doubles, including an eye-popping stat line of 19 points, 18 rebounds and seven assists in the Rams' most recent win over the Lamar Cardinals on Saturday afternoon.
Bejarano began the week with an impressive effort in CSU's 74-61 victory over UIC on Dec. 23, overcoming an uncharacteristic shooting night to post 10 points and 15 rebounds, while dishing out five assists against the Flames.
But it was his monster effort vs. Lamar that really made the 2013 MW Sixth Man of the Year stand out. His stat line of 19 points, 18 boards and seven helpers made him just the ninth NCAA Division I player since 1996-97 to reach those numbers in a single game, and the first since Julian Mavunga of Miami (OH) on Feb. 1, 2012, according to ESPN Stats & Information.
Bejarano's impact was also felt on the defensive end, as he recorded a block in each contest. For the week, Bejarano averaged 14.5 points, 16.5 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game.
On the season, Bejarano has posted 13.8 points and 9.6 rebounds per game, ranked 16th and fourth, respectively, in the Mountain West. His 9.6 rebounds per game rank 29th nationally, and he is the No. 1 rebounding guard in the nation. Bejarano is on pace to become the first guard to lead a CSU team in rebounding since Rams' great Milt Palacio did so in 1998-99.
Bejarano and the Rams return to the court this Wednesday, opening Mountain West play against No. 21 San Diego State at 7 p.m. at Moby Arena. The game will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network. The Rams then head to Albuquerque, N.M., for a tilt against preseason league favorite New Mexico on ESPNU Saturday.
