Opening tip
Colorado State and Southern Mississippi square off in a Christmas Eve matchup tonight at Poliforum Beniot Jaurez in the championship game of the Cancun Governor’s Cup in Cancun, Mexico. Colorado State (7-3) advanced to the championship with a 68-61 victory over Ole Miss on Thursday night, while the Golden Eagles (9-1) picked up a 74-67 win over St. Louis in the other semifinal game.
The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN2 with Bob Picozzi calling the action and Miles Simon providing color analysis. Tip is set for 8 p.m. CT/7 p.m. MT.
About Southern Mississippi
The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles are 9-1 entering tonight’s matchup against Colorado State, with their lone loss coming Dec. 4 at Ole Miss (86-81).
Southern Miss is led by a trio of seniors: Gary Flowers (20.1 ppg), R.L. Horton (12.3 ppg) and Josimar Ayarza (10.2 ppg). Additionally, freshmen D.J. Newbill is averaging double-figures scoring at 10.1 points per game and leads the team in rebounding with 7.2 boards per contest. Newbill leads USM shooting .566 from the field. As a team, the Golden Eagles shoot .462, and have five regulars connecting on more than half of their shots.
They have been dominant through 10 games, averaging 80.7 points per game, and winning by an average margin of 17.2 points and outrebounding their opponents 43.3-32.8. Larry Eustachy is in his seventh season with Southern Mississippi. Eustachy’s Golden Eagles went 20-14 last season en route to an invitation to the CIT. In 20 seasons, Eustachy is 364-240.
Rams vs. the Golden Eagles
Friday marks the second meeting between the Rams and Golden Eagles. CSU defeated Southern Miss, 66-50, in that initial matchup, Dec. 29, 1954.
Looking ahead
Colorado State travels west to San Francisco, Calif., for three games as part of the University of San Francisco’s Hilltop Challenge. The Rams will face the Dons, as well as Dominican University and Hampton University at USF’s War Memorial Gym.
