Opening tip
The Rams will travel south of the border to Cancun, Mexico, for the Cancun Governor’s Cup tournament. The Rams begin the eight-team tournament against Appalachian State on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. MT. It is their first trip south of the border since a preseason trip to Cancun/Mexico City in 2004-05. The other teams competing in the tournament are East Tennessee State, Mississippi, Northeastern, St. Louis, Southern Mississippi and Texas State.
About Appalachian State
Appalachian State enters Wednesday’s contest against CSU with a record of 4-4, and the Mountaineers are coming off of a 71-66 win over Robert Morris on Saturday.
As a team, the Mountaineers are averaging 76.9 points through eight games, and nearly one-third of the team’s offensive production is coming from senior guard Donald Sims (24.9). Sims, who ranks fifth nationally in scoring, has led the team in points in each of the last seven games, including a season-high 40 against Mississippi State on Nov. 19. Also producing for Appalachian State is junior Omar Carter, who averages 14.0 points and 5.3 rebounds. Andre Williamson leads the team in rebounding at 6.3 per contest. Sims also leads the Mountaineers with 20 steals, 36.6 minutes per game, 24 made three-pointers and an .887 free-throw shooting percentage. He is one of four seniors on first-year head coach Jason Capel’s squad.
Rams vs. the Mountaineers
Wednesday will mark the first meeting between the Rams and Mountaineers.
Looking ahead
The winner of the contest between CSU and Appalachian State advances to face either Ole Miss or Texas State in a televised contest on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. CT on ESPNU. The losers square off at 6 p.m. CT on Thursday. For a complete bracket, see Page 8 of this release.
Rams vs. the Tournament Field
Overall, the Rams have limited experience against the field in the 2010 Governor’s Cup. However, in the few games they have played against teams competing in the tournament, they have had success. The Rams are 3-1, with wins at Southern Mississippi (66-50 in 1954-55), on a neutral court vs. Northeastern (63-52 in 2000-01) and at home against Texas State (83-65 in 2004-05). The Rams’ lone loss came against St. Louis in the 1961 NIT at Madison Square Garden in New York City; the Rams fell in the program’s first NIT appearance, 59-53.
