FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Carlton Hurst, regarded as the best player in the Class of 2013 in the state of Colorado, made it official on Monday afternoon, inking a National Letter of Intent to play for the Colorado State men’s basketball program beginning next fall. Head Coach Larry Eustachy made the announcement.
Hurst is expected to make an immediate impact in the Rams’ backcourt in 2013-14.
“Carlton is the best player in his class in the state of Colorado,” Eustachy said. “He has tremendous athletic ability and an innate know-how when it comes to scoring the basketball.”
Hurst, a 6-3, 170-pound guard, averaged a double-double as a junior in 2011-12, pouring in 23 points per game, while notching 10 boards, 5.4 assists and 4.0 steals per contest. He was named the Aurora Sentinel Player of the Year and earned second-team all-state honors for Class 5A after guiding his team to a 20-4 record and the second round of the state championships. Over the last two seasons Hurst, who also competes for the Colorado Chaos AAU program, has recorded 26 double-doubles and three triple doubles.
“It is important to us that the top players from the state of Colorado want to compete at Colorado State,” added Eustachy. “Carlton will bring a high level of athleticism and scoring ability to our program.”
Hurst is the third player to sign with Colorado State during the NCAAs early signing period which began last Wednesday. He joins backcourt mate guard David Cohn (Elmhurst, Ill./York High School) and fellow Aurora native and former Rangeview High School star forward Marcus Holt (Aurora, Colo./Paris Junior College).
“We are extremely excited to add the caliber of player that we have in this class,” said Eustachy last week when the fall signing period began. “Each of these of these young men are players that not only can compete right away, but can help us win at a high level from the moment they step on campus next year. More importantly, they have great character and are dedicated students who will represent this university and community in a positive manner.”
Cohn, a skilled guard out of suburban Chicago, enters his senior season at York High School this fall. He set the school’s single-game scoring record of 47 points as a junior in 2011-12. The 6-2, 170-pounder averaged 22 points and five rebounds, while shooting better than 50 percent from beyond the arc last year, and also starred for the Illinois Wolves, one of the nation’s premier AAU programs under head coach Mike Mullins.
“David is a dynamic scorer who has great athleticism and a terrific competitive spirit,” said Eustachy. He comes from one of the top AAU programs, and in the hotbed of basketball in the Chicago area.”
Holt will return home to Colorado after a two-season stint at Paris Junior College in Paris, Texas. The former standout at Rangeview High School stands 6-10 and weighs in at 200 pounds entering his sophomore campaign at PJC, where he averaged 3.0 points and 3.0 rebounds per game during his freshman season. In 2010-11, Holt led Rangeview to the Great 8 of the Colorado boys state high school championships, garnering offers from Missouri, Xavier and Boston College before enrolling at PJC. As a senior at Rangeview, He averaged 13.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game.
“Marcus is a Colorado kid that brings a tremendous amount of athleticism and upside,” Eustachy said. “He is a coveted big man in the junior college ranks, and we expect him to come in and be able to make an immediate impact for our team.”
