FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Colorado State's men's and women's basketball teams tipped off the 2012-13 season with Moby Madness Monday night.
The free event featured a three-point shooting contest, skills competition and dunk contest, and gave fans a sneak peak at the Rams' new-look rosters.
The three-point competition paired the men's team against the women's program. Each team had five players spread out beyond the arc, shooting five shots apiece in succession to determine the winner.
Freshman Jordan Mason started the contest going 2-for-5 from deep. After Pierce Hornung put a goose egg on the board for the men, West Eikmeier went a perfect 5-for-5 from the top of the key. Greg Smith continued the hot shooting knocking down 4-of-5, and Dorian Green concluded the men's round hitting one shot from the corner.
The women began the three-point event needing to hit more than 12 of their 25 attempts but were only able to connect on nine three-balls.
When first-year women's head coach Ryun Williams addressed the crowd he joked that his team didn't win the contest because they were tired from a two-and-a-half hour practice earlier in the day.
After the men's 12-9 victory in the three-point shootout, a trio of women's players showcased their ball-handling technique in the skills competition.
This event had the players weaving through cones, while using common moves like crossovers and behind-the-back dribbles before having to the bounce-pass the ball through a net. After passing the ball the participant then sprinted to the free-throw line for an elbow jumper before simultaneously dribbling two balls the length of the court and finishing with a layup.
Bejarano, won the three-round event after posting a score of 113, but it was Octeus who stole the show when he jumped over Varsho, catching her over-the-head pass in mid-air before finishing. Octeus was awarded a perfect score on the dunk but it wasn't enough to overcome Bejarano's consistency.
