FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Colorado State men's basketball head coach Larry Eustachy welcomed 20 players to Moby Arena on Friday afternoon as he and his Bahamas Basketball staff opened a 9-Day training camp for the Bahamian Senior National Team on the campus at Colorado State University.
"I'm really excited," said Eustachy who was named the head coach of Bahamas Basketball in March of 2013. "We've got a short period of time to put a team together, but it's neat to have it, basically, on my home court. That takes that out of it, where we can get to the part that really counts, and that's figuring out what team to put together to give us our best chance to win."
The team is preparing for international competition at the upcoming Caribbean Basketball Confederations Senior Championships, July 1-5 in Tortola, British Virgin Islands. The Bahamas is one of four teams placed in Group A alongside Antigua & Barbuda, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, and Cuba. Group B consists of the Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, Guyana and Barbados.
Later this summer the squad will also compete at the Centrobasket Championship, a FIBA-sponsored tournament which will be held in Tepic, Nayarit in west-central Mexico. At Centrobasket, the Bahamas will compete against teams from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Panama, Jamaica, Virgin Islands, Costa Rica and Mexico, with the top 3-4 teams advancing to the FIBA Americas Championships, where a berth in the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympics is up for grabs against competition from North America, Central America, the Caribbean and South America.
The training camp will run for nine days at Colorado State's basketball facilities, culminating Saturday, June 28 before the team makes its way to Tortola. Prior to the CBC Senior Championships, the team will be pared down to a roster of 12 players.
