FORT COLLINS, Colo. –Men’s basketball Head Coach Tim Miles announced Tuesday that the Rams have added transfer Wes Eikmeier to the Colorado State program.

The 6-3, 170-pound guard played in 26 games as a freshman last season at Iowa State, playing a key reserve role for the Cyclones who finished the season with 15 wins. Eikmeier averaged 2.9 points and hit 20 three-pointers, including six games with at least two three-pointers made. He scored a career-high 15 points on five three-pointers vs. Loyola Marymount on Nov. 15.

Per NCAA transfer rules, Eikmeier must sit out the 2009-10 season, but will have three years of eligibility remaining when he begins playing for the Rams at the start of the 2010 season.

Eikmeier was a two-time Gatorade Nebraska Player of the Year in 2007 and 2008 at Archbishop Bergan High School in Fremont, Neb. During his senior season, he averaged 31.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 3.1 assists while leading the Knights to a perfect 27-0 season and a Class D-1 state title. He also led the state in scoring and finished his career with 2,193 points, which ranks eighth all-time in state history.

Eikmeier had several memorable performances for the Knights including a 43-point performance in the state title game and a career high 59-point outburst, including 10 three-pointers against North Bend.

“We’re excited to add Wes to our program,” said Miles. “He had an outstanding high school career at Archbishop Bergan and was well coached at Iowa State. Wes is an excellent shooter and moves well without the ball. He’s a guy that defends and knows how to make his teammates better.”

The Rams now have commitments from the last two Nebraska Player of the Year award winners in Eikmeier and Greg Smith, who will be a freshman at CSU this fall. Eikmeier, Smith and current CSU guard Jesse Carr are all products of the Nebraska Bison Red AAU program. Eikmeier and Carr have played together in the same backcourt for the Bison in the past.
