Rams react to NCAA tournament berth

March 17, 2013

Head Coach Larry Eustachy:
(on whether certain tournament appearances are more special than others)
“It’s always special. There are a lot of coaches wishing they were standing in front of you guys. We’re fortunate and hopefully we can make the best of this opportunity.”

(on what he knows about Missouri)
“They like to pressure and they like to trap. We have to take care of the ball to have a chance.”

(on whether he has any different insight to offer the players with his experience in the NCAA tournament)
“I don’t think so. I think you play a certain way and coaching is really overrated, particularly in this situation. All coaches are pretty good if you’re in the tournament. Players win games, coaches don’t win games.”

(on whether back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances springboards the program)
“I think it’s huge. You keep hearing that name. I don’t think we get Joe (De Cimon) and I don’t think we get Gerson (Santo) if we were where the program was five, six years ago. This will only help. It helped us last year in early signing and it’ll help us this year in late signing.”

(on whether spring break will help the team focus only on basketball)
“I think it helps. It’s good time to do it. Bottom line is our guys know how to play and we’ll have to put more thought than we have all year to get something like this done. We made a lot of mental errors last game.”

Senior G Dorian Green:
(general)
“We’re just excited for the opportunity to get down to Kentucky again and play better than we did last year.”

(on what he knows about Missouri)
“They’re a good team. I don’t know too much about them but we’ll take the next couple days and figure that out. We know they’re a good team and they have some good players so it’ll be a good challenge for us.”

(on his sprained right ankle)
“It’s getting better. We have a week to prepare and rehab a little bit and get some more treatments. It’s getting better so I’m confident it’ll be fine by the game.”

(on playing Missouri)
“It’s huge for us because we’re only guaranteed one game left in our career. We have to play with a sense of urgency. I’m ready to go down there and compete for 40 minutes. It’ll be a great challenge and we’re excited to play again.”

Senior F Greg Smith
(on his reaction when CSU’s name was called)
“I was really excited knowing we’re going back to Kentucky to play against a good Missouri team. Just really excited for this opportunity.”

(on whether he was shocked as to how quickly CSU’s name appeared on the screen)
“I was still texting (smiling). I heard our name and I thought ‘no this can’t be us,’ because last year we had to wait so long. It’s great knowing where we’re going and we can keep going forward now.”

(on being an 8 seed)
“It’s a great opportunity no matter how you get in. We have to go in and line up against Missouri just like they do against us and it doesn’t really matter what seed it is.”

(on what he knows about Missouri)
“I’ve seen them play a lot this year. They have a real good point guard in Phil Pressey who makes a lot of plays for his teammates and they’re a really good rebounding team.”

(on expectations)
“We just have to go out there and play our game. As long as we do what coach has us doing, we’ll be fine.”

Senior F Pierce Hornung
(on making the NCAA tournament)
“It’s great just to be a part of this group of guys here. I can testify as to how hard we’ve all worked to get this program going. Being in the NCAA tournament and having a chance to make some noise in there, it is quite a reward for how much we’re putting in to it.”

(on whether people take turns reminding Dorian Green to ice his ankle)
“Yeah he is pretty diligent. He’s a senior. He knows how much we need him and he’s going to rehab hard to get back to healthy.”

(on whether playing in NCAA tournament last year will help this season)
“I think it helps us out to go through it last year to see how everything goes. It’ll definitely help us out. We have a lot of guys that have played a lot of basketball. We start five seniors; we have a lot of college basketball experience. So that’ll be huge too.”

Senior C Colton Iverson:
(on rebounding after a loss in conference tournament last weekend)
“We’ll go out and have a week of practice and it’s the best time of the year right now and I think we’ll be playing our best basketball this week.”

(on advantage of having Eustachy leading the Rams into the tournament)
“It’s definitely a great advantage for us. He’ll definitely get us ready to play. Our style of basketball has us built for this type of tournament.”
