First-team all-MW performer Colton Iverson
March 11, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Mountain West announced Monday evening its 2013 all-conference awards, and a trio of Colorado State seniors – Colton Iverson (first team), Dorian Green (second) and Pierce Hornung (third) - were honored among the conference’s top 15 players, while classmate Wes Eikmeier earned honorable mention.
The three all-conference selections ties the program record, set last year, for the Rams as a member of either the MW or the Western Athletic Conference.
Iverson becomes the fifth first-team all-MW performer at Colorado State, joining former frontcourt standouts Jason Smith (2006; 2007) and Andy Ogide (2011), and Eikmeier (2012). Green and Hornung each earned their second all-league honors. Both were named to the all-MW third team in 2012.
In addition to the all-conference team selections, Hornung was selected to the Mountain West all-defensive team for the second consecutive year, while Iverson was named the league’s Newcomer of the Year and sophomore guard Daniel Bejarano was tabbed Sixth Man of the Year.
Iverson, a 6-10, 261-pound senior center, was the only MW player to average a double-double in conference play in 2012-13 with a league-high 10.4 rebounds and seventh-best 14.6 points per game. He scored in double figures in 13 of 16 Conference contests, while registering double-digit rebounds in nine games. The Yankton, S.D., product also led the MW with a 60.6 field goal shooting percentage.
Iverson is the first the second CSU player to earn MW Newcomer of the Year, joining guard Marcus Walker who earned the league’s inaugural award as a junior college transfer in 2008.
Green, the Rams’ all-time leader in games played (127), ranked ninth in Mountain West play, scoring 13.4 points per game and was third in the conference at more than 4.0 assists per contest. A native of Lawrence, Kan., he also ranked among the conference leaders in free-throw per centage (fifth; .777) and assist-to-turnover ratio (fourth; 2.18), while averaging a team-leading 33.1 minutes per game against conference opponents.
Hornung, a product of Arvada, Colo., became the Rams’ all-time leader in steals last weekend with four swipes in the Rams’ season-closing victory over Nevada. At 6-foot, 5-inches, Hornung ranks as the No. 2 rebounder in Mountain West play (9.3 rpg). He ranks as the nation’s leading offensive rebounder, and pulled down 4.38 offensive rebounds per game in MW competition in 2013.
Eikmeier, from Fremont, Neb., finished the season as the Rams’ No. 2 scorer in conference action at 14.2 points per game (eight in the MW). He is the league’s best free-throw shooter at 94.5 percent. The senior guard also ranked ninth in the conference in three-pointers per game (1.69).
Bejarano, a sophomore transfer from Arizona, is the second Ram in three seasons to be named the league’s Sixth man of the Year, joining Pierce Hornung who was also tabbed as the top reserve in the conference as a sophomore in 2011. The Phoenix, Ariz., native averaged 5.6 points and 4.9 rebounds off the bench for the Rams in MW play in 2012-13. His 4.9 rebounding average tied for 17th in the league. Bejarano shot 37.2 percent (35-of-94) from the field, while also tallying 12 steals and eight assists.
