Opening tip
Colorado State concludes the 2010 San Francisco Hilltop Challenge on Saturday afternoon, taking on the Hampton Pirates at USF’s War Memorial Gymnasium.
The Rams are riding a six-game winning streak, the longest streak under Head Coach Tim Miles, into the game. Hampton, from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, enters the contest 10-3 overall, but is coming off of a 69-57 loss to San Francisco on Thursday night.
About Hampton
The Hampton Pirates, from Hampton, Va., and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, opened the 2010-11 season in impressive fashion with a 9-2 record entering action at the HIlltop Challenge.
The Pirates opened the Hilltop Challenge with a 78-65 victory over Dominican on Wednesday afternoon, then fell to host San Francisco, 69-57, on Thursday night, and are 10-3 entering Saturday’s contest against the Rams.
More than 70 percent of the team’s scoring comes from their top three offensive performers: junior guard Darrion Pellum (18.3 points), senior forward Charles Funches (12.5) and Kwame Morgan (12.5). All three players are the court for the majority of games, led by Pellum’s 38.0 minute per game.
Morgan makes .314 percent of his three-point attempts, and is 33-for-105 on the season, making nearly half of his team’s three-pointers. Pellum (27-for-77) is the team’s other deep threat. Funches leads the team with 8.6 rebounds per game.
Head Coach Edward Joyner Jr. went 24-21 in his second year at the helm of the Hampton program.
Rams vs. the Pirates
Saturday’s contest marks the first in the series between Colorado State and Hampton.
Looking ahead
The USF Hilltop Challenge closes out non-conference play for the Rams and gives CSU a couple days to prepare for their Jan. 4 meeting with conference rival Wyoming. The Border War is set for 7 p.m. MT, and tips off MWC action for both programs.
