As has been the case all season, the mountain region is full of talented teams, especially on the men’s side. More than any other region, seven teams appear in the latest USTFCCA poll, including the top two schools in the country, No. 1 Colorado and No. 2 Northern Arizona. The Rams are ranked nationally at No. 23, and sixth in their region.
After a late-season surge, finishing third at the Mountain West championships, the women’s squad moved up four spots in the Nov. 5 regional rankings to No. 6. Their field also boasts stiff competition, with reigning MW champions New Mexico at the top of the regional rankings and No. 8 nationally.
Last season, CSU hosted the mountain regional at Fort Collins’ Collindale Golf Course. The women’s team took fifth, led by Whitney Henderson’s 20th place finish overall with a time of 21 minutes, 10 seconds. The men’s team placed ninth behind the Rams’ top finisher Andrew Goodman, who crossed the line in 43rd place (31:30.2).
The top two teams and top four individuals not on an advancing team move on to the NCAA Championships, held in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 23 Additional teams and individuals will be chosen through an at-large selection process following the regional competition on Nov. 16. The top 25 individual finishers will earn all-region distinction.
