FORT COLLINS, Colo. – After completing an unprecedented feat on Oct. 12 at the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational in Madison, Wisc., the Colorado State men’s and women’s cross country teams are looking forward to Friday’s Mountain West Cross Country Championships in Las Vegas. In Wisconsin, the entire competing roster of CSU men’s runners set personal bests in the 8,000-meter race while the entire competing roster of CSU women’s runners set personal bests in the 6,000-meter race. A total of fourteen runners set personal bests in Madison; a sign of significant progress under new head coach Art Siemers.
“The team has been training hard all season for the championship portion of the season starting with the Mountain West Championships. We are ready to battle for a high finish at conference,” Siemers said Tuesday.
Junior men’s runner Alex Muntefering, who placed 34th with a time of 26 minutes, 42.8 seconds at last year’s MW championships, prepared for Las Vegas with a personal best time of 24:12 in the 8,000 meter race at the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational. Muntefering holds the top men’s time in each of CSU’s meets this year.
Senior women’s runner Holly Keeper will compete in her last MW championship race Friday after leading the CSU women with a personal best time of 20 minutes, 43 seconds in Madison. She holds the top women’s time in each of the team’s last two meets and looks to continue the trend Friday.
Men’s runner Christian Meyer and women’s runner Hannah Pensack-Rinehart will compete for top-ten finishes at the MW championships for the second straight year. Meyer finished last year’s race in sixth place with a time of 25:26.2, while Pensack-Rinehart took tenth with a time of 21:25.9.
As a team, the men placed third in the 2011 MW championships while the women took second place. After CSU hosted the 2011 MW championships in Fort Collins, the University of Nevada-Las Vegas will host the 2012 races in Las Vegas, Nev. at Silver Bowl Park.
