FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The 2013 cross country season opens on the grounds of Hughes Stadium Friday with the CSU Open 5k. Prior to the collegiate race, the meet will open with a community 5k at 5:15 p.m. MT. Following the citizen's race, the collegiate women’s 5k race will commence at 6 p.m. MT, with the collegiate men following thereafter starting at 6:30 p.m. MT.
The Rams will host three Division II schools and three DI schools, all from the Front Range. Western State, Colorado School of Mines and Metro State make up the DII competition. Western State’s men’s team placed sixth at the 2012 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championship, while its women’s team finished fourth. Also among the elite DII schools, Colorado School of Mines men’s team placed second and the women finished eighth at last year’s championship.
Division I schools that will join CSU are Air Force Academy, University of Wyoming and University of Northern Colorado.
Whitney Henderson, Chloe Phillips, Alex Muntefering and Alex Balsiger will sit out the season opener, and all freshman runners will be running unattached in their respective events.
It will be a dual-scored meet with separate scores between the Division I and Division II schools. Having the season opener at Hughes will give the CSU community a chance to see their favorite Ram runners before they take off for the season. Parking is available in the lot off of County Road 42 (Dixon Canyon Rd.).
